Opposition leader in Senate: PPP, PML N contact Balochistan Senators

Staff Reporter:

Central leaders of the main component parties of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) made contacts with senators from Balochistan. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League (N) leaders discussed the election of opposition leader in the upper house.

“Sherry Rehman called me sought support for the leader of the opposition”, a senator of a nationalist party said.

Azam Nazeer Tarar, a PDM nominee for the opposition leader also called another Senator in Balochistan regarding the election. “Tarar spoke about the election of opposition leader”, another senator told Quetta Voice.

Both senators requested anonymity.

The two mainstream component parties of the PDM are at loggerheads over the nomination of a joint candidate for the leader of the opposition. Cracks appeared in the opposition alliance over the resignation issue from assemblies. The PPP, one of the main component parties had opposed the decision of resignations from assemblies.

Component parties of the PDM from Balochistan including the Balochistan National Party (Mengal), Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), and National Party (NP) had supported the decision of resignations from assemblies.

Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani of the PPP and Maulana Ghafoor Haideri of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) was the joint candidates of the PDM for the posts of Senate chairman and deputy chairman, respectively. However, the pair lost to the government-backed candidates in the voting on March 12.

The PPP and the PML-N’s rebukes against each other came days after a meeting of the 10-party anti-government alliance formed in September last year witnessed heated exchanges on tendering resignations from assemblies, return of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and Senate election.
