Mr. Qadir got 11 votes from the Balochistan Assembly and elected on a general seat for the upper house. The ruling coalition comprising Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), PTI and other coalition partners backed the independent candidate.

The PTI had earlier awarded a ticket to Abdul Qadir. However, mounting political pressure within the party prompted PM Imran Khan to take the ticket back from Abdul Qadir. PTI then awarded a ticket to Syed Zahoor Agha as a senator on a general seat.

However, Mr. Agha also withdrew from the candidacy after the submission of nomination papers.
