Quetta: Aurat March calls for an end to violence against women

QUETTA: Participants of the Aurat Azadi March on Monday called for an end to violence against women. Dozens of women and men gathered in the premises of Liaquat Park and marched on various roads of the city on the eve of International Women’s Day.

“We want constitutional guarantees for women in Pakistan”, Qamar u Nisa, a well-known lawyer told Quetta Voice. The participants of the march had carried placards and banners inscribed with slogans demanding equal rights for women.

‘Honor killings’ must stop

“Honor killings’ must stop”,  she demanded. The protesters were also chanting slogans in the support of women’s rights and to violence against women.

“The government has to provide protection to women”, Behram Lehri, a member of the civil society said. The participants also demanded an end to early marriages and termed them against basic human rights.

The participants of the march delivered speeches against violence against women outside Quetta Press Club. They vowed to continue the struggle for the protection of the constitutional and social rights of women.

66 women murdered in 2020 in Balochistan 

In Balochistan, violence against women increased in the year 2020. Aurat Foundation Balochistan chapter chief Allauddin Khilji said 66 women murdered in the year 2020 in the province.

33 women murdered in the name of ‘honor killings’, Mr. Khilji informed. He said the government has to take effective steps to provide protection to women in the province.

Aurat Foundation reported 2297 incidents of violence from 25 districts of Pakistan

Aurat Foundation in a recent survey report revealed that 2,297 cases of violence reported from 25 districts of Pakistan in 2020. Most violent cases reported from Punjab.

Aurat Azaid March observed in Quetta and almost all provincial capitals of the country. The women and human rights activists demanded an end to the violence segment of society in the country.
