Dr. Usama Riaz who was treating patients of COVID-19 in Gilgit-Baltistan died in a hospital on Sunday evening. Dr. Usama was treating the patients tested positive for the novel coronavirus a week ago.

This was the first death caused by the novel coronavirus in GB. The deceased was screening patients of novel coronavirus since the global outbreak of the disease. According to information ministry of GB, Dr. Usama was playing an important rather frontline role against the pandemic and sacrificed his life in this battle.

The doctor remained admitted in hospital for a week and on Sunday he was pronounced by the authorities. Dr. Usama’s death news widely went viral on social and formal medial. The people called him a national hero and unsung soldier in the ongoing fight against the COVID-19.

The information ministry said that Dr. Usama was appointed as doctor one and half years back and was serving in GB.
